Passenger-shuttle operators serving central and northern B.C. can apply for as much as $75,000 in operating funding through the Northern Community Shuttle program, helping maintain and strengthen transportation connections for people living in rural and remote communities.
“Affordable and dependable transportation is fundamental to building stronger, more connected communities,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Transportation and Transit. “The Northern Community Shuttle program provides practical support to shuttle operators who are delivering essential services across central and northern B.C. By investing in these transportation networks, we are helping ensure people can access employment, health care, education and other important services, regardless of where they live.”
The program, funded by the Ministry of Transportation and Transit and administered by Northern Development, supports public passenger-shuttle services that connect residents to health care, employment, education, training opportunities and social connections.
“For more than five years, Northern Development has been active in supporting passenger transportation by administering the Northern Passenger Transportation Service funding program on behalf of the Province of B.C.,” said Ben Campbell, CEO, Northern Development. “Opening up the Northern Community Shuttle program to allow operators to access a $75,000 grant is an excellent opportunity to support organizations who are providing vital connections throughout the North. At a time when operating costs are tight, we’re pleased to provide some financial relief.”
The Northern Community Shuttle program provides operating funding for eligible costs, including fuel, staff wages and benefits, insurance, maintenance, marketing and booking services. Services connecting communities to major hubs within and outside Northern Development’s service region are eligible. Eligible routes may include services connecting Ashcroft and Kamloops, or Dawson Creek and Grande Prairie, Alta.
“We provide wrap-around support to our community members, which involves supporting their social, physical and mental well-being,” said Annette Morgan, executive director, Dze L K'ant Friendship Centre Society. “By receiving a Northern Community Shuttle grant to support our shuttle program, we are able to provide free ridership to all, removing a barrier that might otherwise prevent community members from attending health clinics, early learning and care programs, social service organizations, activities and other appointments. With reliable, consistent transportation service, we are seeing improvements in overall family health, education and social cohesion.”
To be eligible, applicants must already be operating a passenger-shuttle service that is open to the public and not limited to a specific user group or purpose.
The intake increases the maximum funding contribution to 80% of eligible operating expenses, up from 75% in previous intakes. Capital expenses, including vehicle purchases, accessibility equipment and tires, are not eligible for funding.
Applications will be accepted from Aug. 17, 2026, until Sept. 16, 2026. Funding decisions are expected in November 2026, with applicants receiving support for services delivered between April 1, 2027, and March 31, 2028.
