Trump Threatens Sweeping Tariffs on Canada

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has warned that he would slap a 100% duty on all Canadian imports if Ottawa proceeds with a trade arrangement with China. He framed the threat while alleging that Beijing aims to take advantage of Canada as a backdoor route to evade American trade restrictions.

Trump has a long track record of deploying tariffs—or brandishing them—as leverage in commercial conflicts with several nations, Canada among them.

During his time in office, his administration enacted multiple levies on Canadian shipments.

Although Ottawa and Washington neared an understanding last year to roll back some of those charges, negotiations eventually broke down. Since then, Trump has repeatedly signaled his willingness to hike tariffs again, even though no fresh penalties have yet been enforced.

“If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the USA,” Trump cautioned in a message posted Saturday on his Truth Social account.

“If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a ‘Drop Off Port’ for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken,” Trump added, referring to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and echoing a nickname he coined while suggesting that America’s northern neighbor should become the 51st US state.

Earlier this month, Carney visited China in an effort to mend frayed ties and secured what Canadian authorities characterized as an initial accord or strategic partnership. Officials emphasized that the understanding targets particular trade obstacles rather than establishing a broad free trade pact.

Tensions between Washington and Ottawa have intensified further in recent weeks after Carney criticized Trump’s ambition to acquire Greenland, a territory the US president has openly said he wants to bring under American control.

Addressing the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Carney argued that the era of a rules-based international system had ended, asserting that “middle powers must act together because if you are not at the table, you are on the menu.”
